PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide newsprint paper for offset printing use having proper resistance to water absorption, free from ground staining attributable to moistening water dry-up even if subjected to massive offset rotary printing, and good in printability, and to provide a method for producing the newsprint paper. SOLUTION: The method for producing the newsprint paper comprises the following process: Newsprint base paper obtained by papermaking of a paper stock prepared by adding an internal sizing agent to a pulp slurry is coated with a surface treatment agent containing a cationic surface sizing agent followed by drying. Thereby, the thus obtained newsprint paper has a sufficient drop water absorbency (50-200 s on felt surface, and 20-70 s on wire surface) and is free from ground staining attributable to water dry-up. Furthermore, in the above process, by separately coating the felt surface and the wire surface with surface treatment agents differing in composition from each other, respectively, to have a drop water absorbency within the range of 20 to 70 s for both the felt surface and wire surface, thus enabling the objective newsprint paper causing no ground staining even if subjected to massive offset rotary printing to be obtained while limiting the coating level of the surface sizing agent to a minimum.
