An electric power steering device where, when an electric motor is stopped while steering assistance force is generated by the motor, steering conditions and traveling conditions of a vehicle are detected to generate optimum electromagnetic braking force. The electric power steering device has steering torque detection means for detecting steering torque transmitted to a steering system, the electric motor for generating steering assistance force for the steering system, and motor control means for controlling the motor based on at least the steering torque. The electric steering device further has motor stop condition detection means (Step S11) for detecting a condition for stopping the motor while the electric motor is controlled by the motor control means and electromagnetic brake controlling means (Step S13-S32) for controlling the electric motor by electromagnetic braking, where the control of the electric motor is made when the result detected by the motor stop condition detection means is a condition at which the electric motor is stopped and also the control of the electric motor is performed so as to minimize kickback based on at least either a state where the steering system is operated or a state where the vehicle is traveling.
