A power cryotron comprises a gate conductor in the form of a superconductive tape wound or folded into a plurality of insulated layers to form a continuous superconductive path, and a control winding surrounding the layers and made of a superconductive material having a critical magnetic field strength greater than the critical magnetic field strength of the gate conductor so that a predetermined magnetic flux produced by a current through the control winding switches the gate conductor from a super conductive to a resistive state. The gate conductor may consist of lead or niobium and the control winding of niobium or niobiumzirconium wire. The tape may be made from a thin flat rectangular sheet (51, Fig. 1, not shown) by cutting a series of slits (52) which extend alternately from one of a pair of opposite edges almost to the other edge. The surfaces of the sheet are then insulated by anodizing or some other means and the sheet is folded along the slots to form the layers. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a long tape (61) with an insulating coating (62) is folded accordion-fashion. In a third embodiment (Figs. 4-7, not shown) a tape (70) is folded bifilarly and surrounded by a control winding (77) and a laminated iron core (82).
