The method involves detecting a gearbox condition by detecting actual gearbox data of a gearbox (10) of a motor vehicle, and switching on an engine of the motor vehicle by a starter-motor (11). An impulse (12) is produced by the starter-motor as input signal for the gearbox to receive impulse response signal functions (13, 14) of the gearbox and/or the starter-motor. The impulse response signal functions of the gearbox and/or the starter-motor are computed in an approximation manner by signal adjusting filters. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a neutral position of a gearbox of a motor vehicle.
