PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an autofocus system capable of rapidly and surely setting an AF area to a fixed position, using a direction designating operation member for designating the moving direction of the AF area. SOLUTION: The CPU 56 of an AF-area designating part 54, connected to a lens device 12, detects the operation of a joy stick in the front-and-rear and right-and-left directions by using detecting sensors 58 and 60, and also detects depressing operations (push button operations) of the joy stick by using a switch 62. It also makes the position of the AF area in an imaging range move vertically and horizontally, in compliance with the operation of the joy stick in the front-and-rear and right-and-left directions, while making the AF area move to the center of the imaging range, when the push button operation of the joy stick is performed.
