PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film which is free of coloration of black display even when obliquely observed and provides high display quality, a polarizing plate using the same, and a liquid crystal display device.

SOLUTION: The optical film contains at least one kind of Rth raising agent as well as at least one kind of low molecular compound characterized in that a molecule absorption wavelength originating from transitional electric dipolar moment My nearly orthogonal to a molecule long-axis direction is longer than a molecule absorption wavelength originating from transitional electric dipolar moment Mx nearly parallel to the molecule long-axis direction and the value ¾My¾ of the transitional electric dipolar moment nearly orthogonal to the molecule long-axis direction is larger than the value ¾Mx¾ of the transitional electric dipolar moment nearly parallel to the molecule long-axis direction.
