PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately authenticate an individual by using photographed moving images with less processing loads. SOLUTION: The authentication method for collating an authentication image which is the face image of a person to be authenticated and a registered image which is a face image registered beforehand comprises: a face image detection process (S12) of detecting the face image of the person to be authenticated in the photographed moving image; a position determination process (S15) of determining whether or not the position of the face image when the face image of the person to be authenticated is detected first in the face image detection process is within the image frame peripheral area of the photographed moving image; and a process (S23) of determining that the person to be authenticated is not identified when it is determined that the position of the face image when the face image of the person to be authenticated is detected first is not within the image frame peripheral area of the photographed moving image.
