摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a polarization converting element usable for an illumination optical system of a projection type display device. SOLUTION: A first translucent sheet material 10 with a polarization separating membrane 11 formed on one main surface of a glass sheet material 1, and a reflection membrane 12 formed on the other main surface, and a second translucent sheet material 20 made of the glass sheet material 1 without anything formed on both of the main surfaces are alternately laminated. The materials are laminated like staircases via adhesive by sequentially displacing positions of surface directions in a manner that an angle formed between the laminated first and second translucent sheet materials 10 and 20 becomes an inclined angle of about 45 degrees, to form a layered body 21. After the formed layered body 21 is cut into a plurality of layered split elements 22 by a plurality of parallel cutting surfaces at predetermined pitches along an inclined angle of about 45 degrees, both ends of the layered split elements 22 are cut using a rotary grinding device 30, and finally a half-wavelength plate 24 is adhered to one part of the laminate split elements 22.
