It is intended to provide a novel method of producing a biocompatible material which comprises effectively making the surface of a base material made of an organic polymer material or the like hydrophilic and then forming an apatite coating. The above problem is solved by providing a method of producing a biocompatible material characterized by comprising irradiating the base material surface with a mixed ion beam comprising a cluster of a substance, which contains an oxygen atom in its molecule and occurs as a gas or a liquid at room temperature under atmospheric pressure, with a monomer and then forming an apatite coating.
