PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid compression self-ignition, when starting an engine, when the intake temperature is high. SOLUTION: This control device of an internal combustion engine has a motor-driven first variable valve train 11 capable of continuously changing a valve lift characteristic of an intake valve 1, and an intake temperature sensor 45 detecting the intake temperature. When starting the engine, when the intake temperature is a preset predetermined value or more, after the effective compression ratio is reduced so as to become the predetermined first effective compression ratio or less by the first variable valve train 11 in cranking, fuel injection is started.
