PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator having a pullup mechanism capable of surely operating an emergency stop device. SOLUTION: This safety device of the elevator comprises a governor mechanism 51 installed to face guide rails 24 installed on the wall surface of a hoistway on both sides of a car along the moving direction of the car and brought into contact with the guide rails to detect the moving speed of the car, a pullup switch mechanism 52 operated by the governor mechanism when the speed of the elevator exceeds a predetermined one, and a pullup mechanism 53 holding the guide rails and pulling up a pullup rod by the operation of the pullup switch mechanism. The pullup mechanism comprises a lever 14 supported swingably around the rotating center of a lever rotating shaft 13, a shoe 20 holding the guide rails installed at the other end of the lever, holding members 15, 16 to which the shoe is fitted, a holding rotating shaft 19 rotatably supporting the holding members, and holding springs 17, 18 imparting rotating force to the holding members.
