PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain superior arc start even if inductance of a reactor is large which is installed in the output route in a welding power source. SOLUTION: A consumable electrode type arc welding machine supplies an output between a consumable electrode and an object to be welded, through the reactor installed in the output route in the welding power source. The consumable electrode type arc welding machine is equipped with: an arc start circuit constituted in such a way that the source side of a switching element and the anode side of a diode are serially connected, and the drain side of the switching element is connected to the input terminal of the reactor, and the cathode side of the diode is connected to the output terminal of the reactor; and an arc start control circuit which, when a welding start signal is input, makes the switching element conduct to energize a high current of a starting current between the consumable electrode and the object to be welded, which, upon completion of energization of the start current, transfers to the initial current of a low current, and which cuts off the switching element when the initial current is energized.
