<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract a face area accurately and rapidly by hardware used in an existing digital camera, etc. <P>SOLUTION: When extracting a human face image region existing in a frame image as a candidate for human face by comparing an image of each portion in the frame image output in the order of frames from a solid-state imaging element with plural types of face patterns 25 and 26 prepared in advance by pattern matching, the face pattern out of the plural types of face patterns which is to be used for extracting the candidate for human face out of the current frame image is limited to the face pattern used when extracting the candidate for human face from a previous frame image and then pattern matching is performed (step S29).
