PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a movable hearth furnace, which is advantageous for obtaining reduced iron containing little phosphorus, when producing the reduced iron in the furnace by using an iron-containing substance and a solid reducing material as a main raw material. SOLUTION: The method for operating the movable hearth furnace includes controlling a staying time of a reduced product in a temperature zone of 1,450°C or higher in the movable hearth furnace into 5 minutes or shorter, and separating slag and the metal in the temperature zone, when collecting the reduced iron by the steps of: charging a mixed raw material including the iron-containing substance, the solid reducing agent and the slag-making material onto a moving bed which moves in the movable hearth furnace; heating, reducing and melting the mixed raw material in the moving furnace to obtain the reduced product containing the metal and slag; and removing the slag thereafter.
