PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with a special workpiece conveying device when carrying in and out a workpiece from a conveyor to a machining table, and to carry in and out the workpiece by operating an opening and shutting cover device with the workpiece directly retained by a chuck mechanism. SOLUTION: An opening and shutting cover device of a machine tool is constituted which makes it unnecessary to arrange the exclusive workpiece conveying device when the workpiece is carried in and out from the conveyor to the machining table, keeps the chuck mechanism for retaining the workpiece arranged on a side face at a machining zone side of an opening and shutting cover arranged on an opening for carrying in and out of the workpiece, and enables the delivery of the workpiece between the conveying device and the machining table of the machine tool by opening and shutting the opening and shutting cover with the workpiece chucked.
