A paste comprising nickel powder suspended in a gel is prepared by dry mixing nickel powder and a powdered cellulose derivative capable of forming a gel with water, subjecting the resulting homogeneous mixture to a vacuum, and thereafter adding water to the mixture in vacuo to form the paste. The cellulose derivative may be hydroxyethylcellulose or carboxymethylcellulose. The water may be degassed, for example by boiling, before being added to the dry powder mixture and also may be preheated to such a temperature that it boils when added to the mixture in vacuo. As described and illustrated, the mixture of nickel powder and cellulose derivative may be placed in a pressuretight container which is evacuated before adding the water; the latter preferably is sucked into the container as a result of the reduced pressure therein. The powder mixture and water may be mechanically stirred, preferably under reduced pressure. By causing the mixing to take place with degassed water boiling under reduced pressure, a paste is given which is free of occluded air bubbles, which retains the original metal powder structure, and which is suitable for the preparation of a sintered electrode carrier for a storage cell. |
