<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to use barcodes locally to encode and overwrite sensitive or important areas of a document. <P>SOLUTION: The method replaces one or more selected areas of the document, such as areas containing sensitive information with one or more barcodes that represent the information in the one or more selected areas. Selection of the one or more areas can be done either by a user or automatically. When the processed document is printed or electronically displayed, the one or more selected areas are replaced with the one or more barcodes so the information in the one or more areas cannot be visually discerned by a human observer. The intended recipient or reader of the document can decode the document including the one or more selected areas into the original form by using a decoder to display the document.
