PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which recognizes a subject in a visual field and moves a focus lens by an AF system different from contrast system AF, whereby a camera is focused while following up the movement of the subject, and to provide an automatic focusing method by recognition of a subject and a program. SOLUTION: The longitudinal size of a face and height of a subject 61 are detected, and a subject distance is estimated from the height in the longitudinal direction of the subject in the imaging range 60 of a CCD and the focal distance (f) of a lens, and the focus lens is moved to a position corresponding to the subject distance, thereby achieving a sharp image following up the movement of the subject 61 when picking up a moving picture.
