PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take a photograph with high focusing performance in accordance with a photographing condition such as a focal value, a zoom value and a subject distance. SOLUTION: A control part 20 detects the stop position, the focal distance, the F value of a zoom lens in a lens unit 11, and the position of a focus lens when taking the photograph by using contrast AF. Then, the depth of field on a front side and the depth of field on a rear side are obtained from the stop position, the focal distance, the F value of the zoom lens, and the position of the focus lens. Furthermore, the size of a focus area which can be changed stepwise in accordance with the photographing condition is decided according to the depth of field on the front side and the depth of field on the rear side.
