<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of periodical thinning due to a nip mark in an image. <P>SOLUTION: The developing apparatus includes: a developer carrier freely rotatably provided to carry developer; a developer supply member rotated in contact with the developer carrier to supply the developer to the developer carrier; and a separating member for separating the developer supply member from the developer carrier in a non-active state where an image is not formed. The developer supply member is separated from the developer carrier in the non-active state where the image is not formed; consequently, such a failure is prevented that the nip mark arises at the press contact part of the developer supply member. When supplying the developer from the developer supply member to the developer carrier, the insufficient supply of the developer due to the nip mark never occurs, and the occurrence of the periodical thinning due to the nip mark in the formed image is prevented.
