PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser generator capable of generating a pulse beam having an ultrashort pulse width. SOLUTION: A part of a pulse beam inputted to a pulse compressor 50 is made as an interferent pulse beam while transmitting through a beam splitter BS<SB>51</SB>. The rest of the pulse beam is made as a pulse beam to be compressed while being reflected with the beam splitter BS<SB>51</SB>. The pulse beam to be compressed is made incident into a diffraction grating forming medium 51. The interferent pulse beam is split into two by a beam splitter BS<SB>52</SB>so as to be a first split pulse beam and a second split pulse beam. The first/second split pulse beams are made incident into the diffraction grating forming medium 51 and interfere with each other, so that a transitional diffraction grating G<SB>51</SB>is formed by generating plasma of a lattice-like distribution on the surface of the diffraction grating forming medium 51. Each pulse front of the first/second split pulse beams made incident into the diffraction grating forming medium 51 is made parallel to a diffraction grating forming face of the diffraction grating forming medium 51.
