PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device which is inexpensive, is fabricated easily, has a long life, and achieves uniform electric discharge. SOLUTION: The lighting device 10b includes: a fluorescent tube 12 having sealed both ends and a fluorescent layer on the inner surface of the fluorescent tube 12; external electrodes 21 formed on the outer periphery of both ends of the fluorescent tube 12; and two plates 16 which hold the fluorescent tube 12 therebetween while giving pressure to the external electrodes 21 to apply voltage thereto and at least one of which is made of a conductor.
