A machine room-less elevator capable reasonably locating a hoisting machine in a limited space at the top of an elevator shaft. In the machine room-less elevator (100), when the elevator shaft (2) is viewed from vertically above, since the end on a main sheave (26) side of the hoisting machine (25) is located above a balancing weight (22) and the end on the opposite side to the main sheave (26) is located above the rear end (20c) of a cage (20), a degree of freedom of locating the hoisting machine (25) can be enhanced and various apparatuses disposed above the cage can be located without interfering with the hoisting machine (25).
