A semiconductor memory device and a method for driving the same are provided to reduce current consumption by stopping operating a counter in an output enable signal generator in an active power down mode. A first counting unit(100) counts a DLL(Delay Locked Loop) clock in response to a clock enable signal. A first delay unit(104) delays the clock enable signal as much as delay time corresponding to a delay model of a DLL circuit. A second counting unit(101) counts an external clock in response to the clock enable signal delayed by the first delay unit. A comparison unit(102) compares outputs of the first and the second counting unit. An output enable signal generation unit(103) generates an output enable signal by using a latency signal outputted from the comparison unit.
