摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method of determining head-disk contact (HDC) in a disk drive by using a signal from a magnetic resistance reading head. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording disk drive is provided with a magnetic recording disk 10, an air bearing slider 13 that is held adjacent to the surface of a turning disk, a magnetic resistance reading head 60 on the slider, and a head floating height actuator 80 to change a clearance between the reading head and the surface of the disk. When determining head-disk contact (HDC) in the magnetic recording disk drive, the following processes are executed: a process to turn the disk around a substantially vertical axial line to the surface of the disk; a process to hold the air bearing slider 13 adjacent to the surface of the turning disk 10, a process to detect amplitude of an MR signal from the reading head 60 over the entire range of approx. 0 to 3 MHz; and a process to determine the HDC when the detected amplitude is larger than a specified threshold.
