<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor which applies a normalization processing appropriate for the image type of image data and can transmit or accumulate the image data in a form converted to an ideal expression without causing any distortion to images. <P>SOLUTION: The image processor identifies the image type of image data using an image characteristic amount of the image data calculated based on the outline of layout (a rough spatial arrangement, distribution, etc. of characters, photographs, and pictures). Thereafter, the image processor selects an image normalization method based on the identification result and information on rules for relating image type to image normalization processing, and carries out normalization processing on the image data based on the selected image normalization processing method and then sends or accumulates the image data. By following the outline of layout, an image characteristic amount which characterizes the image type can be calculated rapidly.
