PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of becoming unable to perform stable compression ignition combustion, when a variation is caused in compression ignition combustion between cylinders and between cycles by the deterioration in a fuel injector, since there exists an operation area where one time fuel injection quantity becomes the vicinity of a minimum injection quantity of the fuel injector, when using this control technique, though stable combustion control by multistage injection is effective in the compression ignition combustion. SOLUTION: In spark ignition combustion, a deterioration state of the fuel injector is diagnosed, and a compression ignition operation area is determined on the basis of its deterioration state. Alternatively, a fuel injection quantity is changed on the basis of the deterioration state, and a change in a combustion state caused by its change is corrected by the valve timing.
