PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic frictional engaging element and an automatic transmission capable of reducing an installation space and changing the capacity of transmission torque in accordance with demand. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission provided with a direct clutch 60 for tightening a sun gear 52 of a planetary gear unit 51 and a carrier 54 by different capacities of demand transmission torque to input power into a ring gear 53 and output power from the carrier 54 has a piston 71 forming a control oil pressure chamber 70 in a clutch drum 61 connected with the carrier 54 and a cancel chamber 78 opposing to the control oil pressure chamber 70 through the piston 71. This automatic transmission supplies control oil pressure into the control oil pressure chamber 70 in accordance with capacity of demand transmission torque or supplies control oil pressure into the control oil pressure chamber 70 and supplies cancel oil pressure opposing to the control oil pressure in the control oil pressure chamber 70 into the cancel chamber 78.
