PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a switchback mechanism, a switchback device, and a switchback method capable of enhancing the operation rate of the device by detecting paper sheets stagnating in a switchback part and automatically discharging them at an appropriate timing and remarkably reducing the number of times of the stopping of the device for treating jamming of paper sheets. SOLUTION: The switchback mechanism 2a for reversing the direction of transportation of mail M comprises switchback rollers 14, 16 for rotating the mail M held and arrested by nips N in both normal and reverse direction. When there is a mail M coming out of the nips N of the switchback rollers and stagnating in the switchback part 12, a pressing roller 45 is pressed against a delivery roller 41 rotating in the R1 direction at all times, and the stagnated mail M is held and fed to the nips N.
