PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cosmetic having excellent humectant effects over a long period while softening skin or hair. SOLUTION: The cosmetic is obtained by formulating (a) an ester of a polyhydric alcohol of a specific chemical structure with an 8-30C straight-chain or branched chain fatty acid with (b) a 14-30C higher alcohol, (c) a hydrophilic surfactant and (d) water. In the ester, the number of un-reacted hydroxy groups contained in one molecule of the ester is 1 when the number of the hydroxy groups contained in one molecule of the polyhydric alcohol constituting the ester before reaction is 2 and the average degree of esterification is≥51 to <95% when the number of the hydroxy groups contained in one molecule of the polyhydric alcohol before reaction is≥3.
