[PROBLEMS] To provide a tappet clearance adjusting method with which a tappet clearance can be highly accurately set in a short time. [MEANS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEMS] The amount of projection of a valve (11) measured by a measurement unit (10) and a target tappet clearance are added together, and the value obtained by the addition is converted into the rotating angle of an adjust screw. To be more specific by using concrete values, if the amount of the projection of the valve (11) measured by the measurement unit (10) is 0.1 mm when the target tappet clearance is 0.05 mm, the return angle (?) of an adjust screw (15) is ? = (0.05 + 0.1)/ 0.0013888 = 108°, where the value 0.0013888 (mm) is the amount of advancement of the adjust screw (15) obtainable when it is turned by 1°.
