Extract (A) that contains, on total active substance content, at least 15 %, by weight of oligomeric proanthocyanidins of type OPC A2 (I), and obtained from the husks of Lichi sinensis fruits, is new. Extract (A) that contains, on total active substance content, at least 15 %, by weight of oligomeric proanthocyanidins of type OPC A2 (I). It is prepared by: (a) extracting husks of Lichi sinensis fruits with lower aliphatic alcohol, optionally mixed with water; (b) optionally concentrating and/or filtering the extract, then chromatographic separation; (c) subjecting the recovered OPC A2-rich fraction to liquid-liquid extraction; and (d) recovering the organic phase. Independent claims are also included for: (a) specified method for preparing (A); and (b) use of extracts of L. sinensis fruit for preparation of food supplements. ACTIVITY : Dermatological; Antiinflammatory. MECHANISM OF ACTION : (I) inhibit matrix metalloproteases. An extract prepared by the new method, containing 23 %, by weight (I), was tested at 0.0 weight-volume % against collagenase from Clostridium histolyticum on a fluorophore-labeled gelatin substrate and gave 67 % inhibition; compare 34 % inhibition for a conventionally prepared extract that contained 10 %, by weight (I). |
