The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1023791/C2/1> wherein R is a phenyl or an alkylphenyl radical having 1-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety thereof or a trifluoromethylphenyl, halophenyl, naphthyl, benzyl or cycloalkyl radical and n is zero or 1; and compounds of the formula <FORM:1023791/C2/2> wherein n is zero or 1. The invention also includes a general method for making thioethers comprising reacting a halogen substituted compound of the formula R(X)n, where R is a hydrocarbon radical, a substituted hydrocarbon radical or a heterocyclic radical containing N and/or S and carbon in the ring, X is bromine, chlorine or iodine and n is 1 to 6, with an alkali metal mercaptide R1SM, where R1 is a hydrocarbon radical or a substituted hydrocarbon radical and M is sodium, potassium or lithium, in a solvent which boils above 125 DEG C. at 760 mm. pressure and which contains the structure -CO-N <, wherein there is no hydrogen bonded to the N atom, the substituents in the hydrocarbon radicals, where present, being such that they do not interfere with the re-action. Specified values of R include aliphatic radicals, aromatic radicals, which may be substituted by phenoxy, phenylmercapto, nitro, halogen, haloalkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy and sulphonate groups and heterocyclic groups containing thiophene, thiazine, pyrazine, pyrrole, pyrimidine, quinoline, thiazole and imidazole rings. Examples of R1 include aliphatic groups and aromatic radicals substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy and chloro groups. Specified solvents include the N,N-dialkylalkylamides and the N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones. The compounds of the invention are used as herbicides (see Division A5). Numerous examples illustrating the process and compounds of the invention are provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 952,180.ALSO:The invention comprises herbicidal compositions which contain compounds of the formula <FORM:1023791/A5-A6/1> wherein R is phenyl or an alkyl phenyl radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety thereof, or a trifluoromethylphenyl, halophenyl, naphthyl, benzyl or cycloalkyl radical and n is zero or one, together with a herbicidally inert carrier. In general the compositions contain 0.5-95% by weight of the compounds I and are applied in amounts of 1/2 -50 lbs per acre based on the compounds I.
