The method involves heating oxidation catalyst of the combined exhaust subsequent treatment system to a temperature given in advance, if the momentary temperature of the oxidation catalyst is smaller than the given temperature. The catalyst storage and particle filter arrange oxidation catalyst for oxidation of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas and covers unburned hydrocarbons. The exhaust gas is enriched for a given time interval given with reducing agents for reduction of nitrogen oxides to predetermine the temperature at a given time.
