A radioactivity monitoring apparatus 1 comprises radioactivity detection means 6 and control assembly 2 including signal processing means, the signal processing means being configured to determine a high count event when a detected radioactivity level is determined to be greater than a predetermined level during a sample time period, and the signal processing means being further configured to determine an alarm condition when a plurality of consecutive high count events is determined over successive sample time periods.
