The system for carrying away metal chips by means of a suction airflow from the working space of metal cutting machines has a suction funnel (6) at the rear end of a chip conveyor (9) and also acting as the entry point (8) of a first diversion pipe (3) of a branch pipe (2). The branch pipes lead into a collecting pipe (1) in star-form. An intermediate section (4) of the branch pipe has plate-type slide valves (16). The control of the slide valves and suction air flow is by means of sensors (26) which recognize chip filling states.
