PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection type video display device using one optical writing type readout light valve of a transmission type. SOLUTION: LEDs 1R, 1G and 1B are successively lit in a time-division manner. Each color light is transmitted through a readout light valve 34 and guided to a dichroic cube 28. The dichroic cube 28 reflects ultraviolet light and transmits visible light. An image writing optical system is equipped with one ultraviolet light LED 21 as a light source for writing images for respective colors. A writing light valve (LCOS device) 25 for modulating writing light (ultraviolet light) is irradiated with P polarized light transmitted through a polarizing beam splitter 24. The writing light valve 25 generates image light by modulating the received P polarized light. The image light is obtained as reflected light, which is changed into S polarized light. The writing image light being the ultraviolet light is reflected on the dichroic cube 28 and guided to the readout light valve 34. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
