960, 761. Monitoring reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 2, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1962], No. 1048/62. Addition to 913, 489. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6C. A method of determining neutron flux distribution in the core of a nuclear as in the parent Specification wherein a filament of fluid is introduced into the core and subsequently scanned to measure the distribution of its radioactivity, is characterized in that irradiation of the filament occurs between regions where the density of the ambient flux is subjected to a localized change. The fluid may be argon and may be passed through small bore U- shaped tubes extending along the length of the reactor core. At the points where each tube enters and leaves the core it is surrounded by neutron absorbing collars which locally reduce the neutron flux; consequently the record of radioactivity will show prounounced dips corresponding to parts of the filament of gas which were adjacent the collars. |
