The method involves identifying a permanently closed electronic switch (3) in a commutating arrangement (K). A short-circuit current is conducted via error free electronic switches (4, 6, 8) of the commutating arrangement by the identified permanently closed switch, so that the identified permanently closed switch is destroyed. A potential arrangement for the permanently closed switch is determined between associated phase windings (9) and an associated potential (13) in the arrangement. An independent claim is also included for an electrically commutated electric motor comprising a neutral point connection.
