PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera capable of performing appropriate focus detection in accordance with a photographic scene. SOLUTION: In the camera equipped with a focus detection part 8 capable of detecting the focusing state of a photographic lens 2 in a plurality of focus detection areas, a plurality of optional focus detection areas are designated from the plurality of focus detection areas by using an input operation part 15 so as to form an optional polygonal focus detection range (range-finding point group and zone type), and the focusing state of the photographic lens 2 is decided by a control part 14, based on the result of detection by the focus detection part 8 concerning the formed focus detection range, so that the appropriate focus detection in accordance with the photographic scene is performed.
