PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of avoiding a collision to a body section following the closing operation of a document placement table with a simple structure without using any separate components, such as a damper. SOLUTION: A projection 107 is formed around a rotating shaft body 101 on the bottom surface of a document tray 10 mounted to a body section 7 of the image reader rotatably, and a sliding surface T to an upper surface S of the body section 7 is formed on the outer-periphery surface. The sliding surface T of the projection section 107 is formed in a curved-surface shape from the front end face of the document tray 10 to the bottom surface, and the distance between the rotating shaft body 101 and the sliding surface T is set so that the distance becomes longer from a front end side to the bottom surface side gradually. The sliding surface T is in slide contact with the upper surface S for generating friction force, and the generated friction force is allowed to become larger gradually, thus closing the document placement table quietly even if hands are moved off the document tray 10.
