PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of applying processing such as reproduction to a signal recorded on a recording medium independently of its recording system. SOLUTION: A signal processing apparatus disclosed herein discriminates whether or not an optical disk on which contents are recorded by both forms of principal signals and Proxy signals is a disk adopting a system from which the principal signals can be reproduced (discrimination processing in step S3). When discriminating that the disk adopts the system from which the principal signals can be reproduced, the apparatus uses the principal signals to reproduce the contents (ordinary optical disk processing in step S4). On the other hand, when discriminating that the disk adopts the system from which the principal signals cannot be reproduced, the apparatus displays warning denoting it and uses the Proxy signals to reproduce the contents (simple optical disk processing in step S5).
