PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mechanism for shifting a projected image without moving a device body without causing upsizing, heavy weighting and cost rising in a projection type video display device constituted to write an image in a light valve for generating projected image light with light. SOLUTION: Specified polarized light transmitted through a polarizing beam splitter 24 is radiated to a writing light valve (LCOS device) 25. The writing light valve 25 generates image light by modulating the received specified polarized light. Writing image light emitted from the writing light valve 25 is radiated to respective readout light valves 31, 32 and 33. The writing light valve 25 is supported by a shift mechanism. The shift mechanism shifts the writing light valve 25 up and down and right and left on a plane perpendicular to an image writing optical axis.
