PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module that is thinned in the optical axis direction and capable of accurately detecting the position of a lens, and to provide a personal digital assistant equipped with the optical module. SOLUTION: The optical module is equipped with a lens-holding body 22 holding a lens group 21; a motor 13 having an output shaft 13b, extended in a direction orthogonal to the optical axis of the lens group 21 and making the output shaft 13b rotate; and a transmission mechanism 53 converting the rotation of the output shaft 13b into translation in the optical axis direction and transmitting it to the lens-holding body 22, and includes a photoelectric sensor 61, functioning as a detection part for detecting the position of the lens holding body 22 in the optical axis direction, and a part to be detected 62, formed on the side surface part (base) 221 of the lens-holding body 22.
