PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ultrafine metal particles by which, even in the case that the ultrafine metal particles are produced in an aqueous medium, easier separation of the aqueous medium can be done. SOLUTION: The method for producing the ultrafine metal particles has the following steps: (a) a step of neutralizing, in an aqueous medium, the electric charge of a complex ion of a baser metal ion and a ligand by means of a surfactant having an electric charge opposite to that of the complex ion to form a complex ion associate in a precipitation region; (b) a step of adding, after the step (a), a nobler metal ion to the aqueous medium to oxidize the baser metal ion and also reduce the nobler metal ion to a nobler metal; and (c) a step of precipitating, after the step (b), the nobler metal together with the associate to recover the resultant precipitate.
