PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency braking device of an elevator capable of preventing a main rope from being slipped and capable of surely urgently stopping a car when the speed of the car is excessively increased. SOLUTION: This emergency braking device comprises braking members 13a, 13b so installed on one side of a suspension means as to have a predetermined distance from the suspension means 6 wrapped around the drive sheave 4 of the elevator and pressing members 14a, 14b so installed as to face the braking members on both sides of the suspension means to have a predetermined distance from the suspension means and movable to the braking member side. When the speed of the car suspended by the suspension means reaches a predetermined one beyond a rated speed, the pressing members are moved to the braking member side, the suspension means is moved in the direction that the winding angle thereof around the drive sheave is increased, and the suspension means is pressed against the braking members.
