PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform width detecting operation of a recording medium at a high speed, in a recorder recording an image on the recording medium. SOLUTION: A dot impact printer records the image on the recording medium. A medium width detecting sensor 55 detecting the existence of the recording medium is mounted on a carriage mounted with a recording head 18. A width of the recording medium is detected by providing a detecting state of the medium width detecting sensor 55 while scanning the carriage at a predetermined speed in the width direction of the recording medium. In this detection, a section including the side end of the recording medium is specified in a scanning range of the carriage, and the carriage is moved at a higher speed than the predetermined speed in at least a part except for this section.
