A liquid crystal display unit being high in visibility independent of bright or dark surrounding environment, and low in power consumption and cost, comprising a liquid crystal layer (6), two substrates (1, 2) holding the liquid crystal layer (6) between them, and a backlight (50) sequentially emitting lights of a plurality of colors. One picture element consists of three R, G, B pixels serving as a light reflecting area and a pixel having a transparent layer W serving as a light transmitting area, a light from the backlight (50) passes through a transparent electrode (4) for transmission displaying in the light transmitting area, and a light reflected off a reflection electrode (5) is used for reflection displaying in the light reflecting area.
