<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visibility and hence the operability, in order to obtain a universal mode provided for users who are unable to adapt to complex operations, such as physically challenged persons, young persons, or aged persons. <P>SOLUTION: In a compound machine having a copying machine function, a touch panel device P displays, on a standby screen in a standard mode, soft keys for many optional functions in full color, as well as a set number of copies. When the touch panel device P is switched to a universal mode, a display area A1 is switched to a monochrome high-contrast display. Also, a screen H10 for a set number of copies is enlarged and displayed so that only setting the number of copies takes precedence. The soft keys relating to the other functions are deleted, except for a key B10 that is used to shift to the selection of another function, and accordingly, the number of copies can be input through numerical keys.
