PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader which prevents inconveniences where wavy noise is generated in a read image by reliably eliminating foreign matters adhering to or remaining on reading glass for reading the image of a document being carried optically. SOLUTION: In the image reader for optically reading the image of a document in a read position A while conveying the document directly above the reading glass 12 by an automatic document carrying device 20, a document guide sheet (cleaning member) 30 is installed on the upstream side in a document conveyance direction B of the read position A on the reading glass 12. The reading glass 12 reciprocates in parallel with the document conveyance direction B, thus removing foreign matters adhering or remaining on the glass surface. The cleaning operation is executed at prescribed timing when the automatic document carrying device 20 closes down the reading glass 12. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
